When
you think about spider cannibalism, the first thing that comes to your
mind is the strong male since in the human society males are portrayed
as overpowering, while females are viewed as weak and helpless. The word
"male" is the loanword from Latin "malediction" that means "evil". It
is usually viewed as muscular and strong when applied to a plant,
animals, or the human being. "Female" is a Latin word that means
"woman". It is the irony that when we split the word "female" we can get
"iron man" because "Fe" in Latin stands for iron, and "male" represents
a man. Unfortunately the society doesn't see females as strong as
males. It doesn't matter who we are talking about, an animal or a human
being; women are always viewed as a weaker sex incapable of things that
man can do. Spider cannibalism completely changes that idea.
Females spiders kill and eats the male during or after courtship and mating. Male spiders took care of their nests. "Males of many species adjust their activities among mating, nest guarding, and feeding depending upon the size and age of their brood. A male may shift from the mating to the parental phase once an appropriate number of eggs have been deposited in his nest." There is role reversal of the traditional human male-female relations. Female spiders are strong so they take the role of a human male, while the spider male takes place as a human female. The female spider uses the male to get fertilized, and when she doesn't need her mate, she eats him, sometimes in the most horrendous way possible. She stabs the male many times and then tightens him in the web to make him suffer. Similar thing may be applied to humans, except for the physical murder we like to see that people that hurt us suffer. It brings us a sense of release and revenge. Female spiders show that they also like to see males suffering and from their behavior we know that that is their attitude towards males. Both in a spider and human worlds we might not like each other as male and female but we still need each other in order to continue the circle of life. Looks can be deceiving. On the outside female can look like pretty and easy to hurt, just like a flower. However, there might be the soul of a devil hidden inside that flower. Females can look small and helpless but it might turn out that they are stronger than males and they show their strong side in the difficult situation. The nature created woman to be strong, and a woman is able to handle almost anything, from work to house chores, childbirth and being the provider of care for the children. Female spiders and female human beings share something in common. If the female spider or human sense danger coming toward their family, they will do anything to protect their offspring. Spiders are small, but strong, even though the way they kill doesn't sound harsh. "First I dive at him. Next I wrap him up. Now I knock him out, so he'll be more comfortable.... flies, bugs, grasshoppers, choice beetles, moths, butterflies, tasty cockroaches, gnats, midgets, daddy long legs, centipedes, mosquitoes, crickets - anything that is careless enough to get caught in my web."(p. 37-39) Despite this gentle way of killing, spiders, who are perceived as small and helpless, can be as strong and powerful as the one who is twice their size. However, when it comes to female and male spiders, there is a bit of controversy in their size since the female spider is usually bigger than male. It all becomes unimportant because the big and heavy elephant is afraid of a spider. |
